He wore only a loincloth and a scarlet headband. His hair was to his waist. There was a long, jagged scar across his chest from his left shoulder nearly to his navel. His skin was copper-colored, and beneath it muscles rippled with each breath and small movement. He was tall for an Apache, taller than all but a handful of the white soldiers back at the fort, and his black eyes stared out over high, sharp cheekbones. His nose was straight and unusually narrow, his forehead high and smooth. He was a younger man than she had imagined. 'Who are you?' he asked. 'I am Mary Hart and I demand that you re- lease me.' 'Who are you?' he repeated. And she could only answer with the truth she no longer could escape in this man's presence, in this man's power. 'I am Cheyenne .. '
